Review by David OK, first of all, I used to go to school with Paul (I was in his tutor group to be correct). Although we went our separate way, he went to art school, I went for science/biology, he recently phoned me up excited at the release of his first book. To be honest I prefer my science-fiction to fantasy so the only reason that I bought Tarnish was because I was interested in what Paul had come up with. I found his book a bit hard going, especially towards the end, but once I had finished I realized what an important book this might be. First off, it crosses all barriers, in that you can only call it fiction. Secondly, there's some sort of concept behind it, whether it's the language changing to adapt the characters' thoughts or the abstract representation of tragedy. Don't really know for sure, because Paul isn't a great conversationalist. Anyway, I was glad to read it, and if there's a sequel I'd probably buy that too, to see how many more barriers he's broken down. I felt it necessary to tell other people about this book. God knows how popular Paul will become. I wish him the best of luck, because he must be facing an uphill struggle with the publishing industry. |
