The Son of Neptune

Rick Riordan
The Son of Neptune
Fantasy Tween4/15/2012 Rating: 4 Scrolls

It's daunting to have amnesia and have three monsters chasing you. One of them is trying to get Percy Jackson to eat the sample of poisoned food on her tray. He's in California, can't remember how he got there or where he was before. He knows he has support nearby, if he only knew who. Fortunately Frank and Hazel find him. They get Percy to Camp Jupiter before the monsters get him.

Camp Jupiter is the home of the Roman demigods. Percy remembers he is a Greek demigod, the son of Poseidon. His Roman equivalent is Neptune. The Roman gods are more warlike than the Greek gods. The Roman demigods, especially Octavian, one of the leaders, hate the Greeks. Percy doesn't mention his vague memories and takes his assignment to Legion Five. Legion Five is considered the joke of the camp. He's happy, though, because Hazel and Frank belong to it.

After surprising the camp with a successful war game, Percy, Frank, and Hazel are sent on a quest. Frank's father finally claims him, then sends them to Alaska, the land beyond the Greek and Roman gods' influence. Gea, Mother Earth, is trying to rise again. The three demigods are sent to destroy her latest attempt - one that Hazel unwittingly brought to life. According to a prophesy, one of them will die on the quest. Even so, they travel to Alaska.

Rick Riordan brings back Percy Jackson for this exciting adventure. The Roman gods are more regimented and war-like than the Greek gods (which is saying something). The Roman demigods do not trust the Greeks. The kids at Camp Jupiter don't know about the kids at Camp Halfblood. As Percy slowly regains his memories in The Son of Neptune, he realizes that their missing praetor Jason is with the Greek campers. Will he be able to convince the Romans of that?

The Son of Neptune carries on the fantasy Riordan has created in his Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Heroes of Olympus series. It is engaging and fast paced. The tweens who are following this series will like this one, too.
