Mattimeo

Brian Jacques

Fantasy2/20/2002

Slagar the Cruel, the masked fox, is out for revenge. He is also a slaver. He has the perfect way to fulfill both missions. He is going to kidnap the Warrior Mouse' son.

Matthias' son, Mattimeo, is precocious. He is always in trouble, then out again. He anticipates the day he can handle his father's great sword. But for now, he and his friends are preparing for the Summer Feast at Redwall. Abbott Mordalfus is baking his special cake. Friar Hugo is busy in the kitchen. Basil Stag Hare is coming in for the Feast (but we know Basil always likes to show up for food). All of the Redwall inhabitants are excited, including Mattimeo and his friend. As the feast starts, a travelling circus arrives. This is one more piece of excitement for the evening.

When Matthias next awakes, Mattimeo and some other youngsters are missing. Three adults have been killed or injured. The travelling circus was more than anticipated. Matthias and his friends promise to find and return the kidnapped friends. Mattimeo finds himself chained up to the others and more young people he does not know. They are being taken away for slaves.

What a charming fantasy. This is a worthy sequel to Redwall and Mossflower. I enjoyed returning to Matthias, Cornflower, Abbott Mordalfus, Constance the Badger, and Basil Stag Hare, among others. Plus we meet the next generation to care for Redwall. This is well written, exciting, and fun to read. This book stands well on its own without the first two if you have found it first.
