Harry Potter can't wait for the summer to be over. Dudley Dursley has been forced on a diet. Aunt Petunia has insisted everyone in the house go on the diet. Fortunately, Mr. Weasley has obtained box seat tickets to the International Quidditch World Cup. The Weasley's come early, disrupting the Dursleys, and Harry is off to an exciting tournament. When the school year starts at Hogwarts, Professor Dumbledore announces there will be a different competition this year. Instead of the quidditch tournament between the four houses, there will be a Triwizard Tournament between Hogwarts, and two European wizarding schools - Beauxbaton and Durmstrang. One champion will represent each school. Only the older students are allowed to enter. But something is going on in the world of wizard evil. Lord Voldemort is trying to return. Someone stole Harry's wand at the World Cup. Someone uses his wand to light the Dark Lord's symbol above the World Cup. The Death Eaters were playing with the Muggles. The new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher is Mad Eye Moody, a wizard who caught Death Eaters when Lord Voldemort was alive. Then, when the Goblet of Fire gives up the names of the school champions, an odd occurence adds to the presence of evil. Harry's name is offered as a forth name. Harry doesn't have a choice - he has to participate in the dangerous tournament. Once again Harry and friends come alive. Rowlings has put together another adventure for Harry, Ron, and Hermione that enchant and enthrall the reader. New forms and twists of magic are revealed. Harry discovers new powers as he faces the three tasks of the tournament. The champions from the other schools include the world's best Quidditch seeker, the position Harry normally plays. The final confrontation kept me on edge even though I knew Harry had to come through (there's another book so he has to). The series is best read in order. If you haven't tried the Harry Potter series, you're in for a treat. |
