My daughter kept telling me that I'd probably like these books. They're definitely rough, but she's right. I may not get back to them immediately, but I will. She lives out of state but will be in town this coming weekend. Since I borrowed this from her, I knew I had to read it before I saw her so she could take it home with her. Normally with this type of fiction I give a synopsis of the story. But before I can do this for Blaze of Memory, I'd need to give some background. I was able to figure this out from this book, so obviously you can pick it up without the previous books in the series. There are normal humans and there are Psy people with many psychic abilities such as telepathy, telekinesis, and empathy. The majority of the Psy people cut themselves off from all emotions in the 1970's. Now it's over 100 years later. Some Psy people escaped and went underground to keep their emotions despite the dangers that emotions can cause to Psy. They're called the Forgotten, and are still hiding from the Psy. Devraj Santos is the current head of Shine, the group that supports the Forgotten. One night he walks out of the building and finds an unconscious woman who has been tortured laying in front of the door. He takes her to the Shine infirmary. When she wakes up, she has amnesia. They quickly determine she is Psy, not one of the Forgotten. With a little searching, they find a Changeling member who can identify her. She is Ekaterina Haas. She had worked in a lab that had kidnapped Forgotten children to test their abilities. The lab was destroyed and all were thought to be dead. She instead was taken to a Psy enforcer. She was then tortured until she broke, and was eventually reprogrammed. When she wakes up she doesn't remember anything. Dev is there. He tells her who she is. She still doesn't remember, but doesn't like the name Ekaterina. She changes it to Katya. Dev keeps Katya close to him once she's ready to leave the hospital. She had been sensory deprived while she was in captivity as well as being beaten. She's frightened - of herself as well as for those around her. Both she and Dev are sure she was programmed to be a weapon against Shine or Dev personally. Her memory starts returning in flashes. Dev and Katya both know that he may have to kill her. She even makes him promise to do so if she becomes a real threat. They also both know that they are attracted to each other. Dev can't afford to become sexually or emotionally involved with Katya. She is afraid to, because she may be programmed to destroy Dev. How do they fight the attraction, "defuse" her, and keep her safe from the Psy? Nalini Singh's Blaze of Memory is a paranormal romantic suspense novel. The reader knows that Dev and Katya will get together and be able to solve the issue of her being a possible assassin. Even so, Singh writes a twisty tale with hooks that keeps the reader involved. The Changelings are major characters in this book. I'm sure some of the couples featured in earlier novels in the series. The world Singh has created is fantastic and drawn well, so it's believable. Although the Psy had good cause to want to renounce all emotion, it came at a great cost. The Forgotten and the Psy are now enemies; the Forgotten are the hidden underground. The book would have been stronger if I had read earlier books in the series. While Singh is able to make a new reader understand her world, background probably makes it clearer.
