Kendall Deaton survives an auto accident that killed one other passenger. She pulls herself, the man driving, and her infant son up out of the ravine. They are rescued and taken to the local hospital. She is only bruised. The man has broken his leg and has a concussion. When he wakes up and asks "Who am I?" Kendall looks him in the eye and says "My husband." The man is certain she is lying. Yet she knows things about him a wife would know, like his clothing sizes. He knows something is not right with the situation. He stops her from leaving the hospital in the middle of the night without him. Kendall is a woman on the run with her baby. She is frightened. Having an amnesiac husband with her is not helping. She has learned how to run and not leave a trail. She is also innately honest and kind. They may leave the hospital in the middle of the night, yet she ensures enough cash to pay their bill is left behind. Memories of her marriage and married life in South Carolina keep recurring to her. She was a public defender in their small town. Her husband and father in law do not approve of many of the people she has to defend. Her ideals are shaken. She keeps trying to leave the man, who she says is John, behind and run again without him. He is perceptive. He knows she is running from something and does not want him along. He thwarts her at each attempt to leave him. He stays with her and discovers himself falling in love with her despite his amnesia. Had he been in love with her like this before? He doesn't think so, yet he is not certain. This is a remarkable, suspenseful book. Kendall's reasons for running are eventually revealed. She has a good reason to be frightened for herself and her son. John wants to protect her. He wants to find out if they are criminals. He wants to return to his life. And he wants to stay away from that baby. The surprises in this book continue to the last page.
