Clare Lancaster returns to Arizona at her father's request. She had been there 6 months earlier and he had just learned about her. Her half-sister Elizabeth had needed rescuing from a bad marriage and Clare had done the rescuing. Unfortunately, she was caught up in a scandal that ruined her engagement and cost her the job she had back in San Francisco. She found her brother-in-law's body and people assumed she killed him. There are even rumors that she had an affair with him and purposefully pulled he and Elizabeth apart. Since she is here in Arizona anyway, she hopes to find out what really happened to Brad McAllister. Her father, Archer Glazebrook, is a wealthy businessman and a member of the Arcane Society, as is Clare,Elizabeth, Archer's wife Myra, and Clare's mother. They all have psychic powers of some sort. His is the ability to detect patterns. Clare is a lie detector. Her power is so strong she always knows when someone is lying. When her powers first manifested she had trouble adjusting to the fact that everyone tells lies. Now she is used to and has learned to adjust. Jake Salter is Archer's business consultant on an unknown project. Clare knows that Jake isn't exactly lying to her when they start talking, nor is he telling the complete truth. She realizes he is living a lie, but she doesn't know what it is. He also has powerful psychic talents and is a member of the Arcane Society. What neither of them realize is that their individual quests are both part of a larger scheme that could break the Arcane Society. What they both realize and try to deny is the deep attraction they have for each other. In that direction lies madness... The Arcane Society is centuries old. It's members are all people with some sort of psychic powers that are measured, rated, and governed. Members tend to marry within ranks to increase the powers. Jayne Ann Krentz and her Amanda Quick persona author these novels depending on whether the book takes place in the past or the present day. Krentz enjoys writing about paranormal, especially esper or psychic powers and has developed a new series to expand her ideas. White Lies is enjoyable and fairly predictable. It builds well but falls a bit flat at the end. Still, I'm now hooked into the Arcane Society. I'll have to start watching for these. Notice: Strong sexual content |
