When her brother's company is threatened by a big business entrepreneur, Hannah Jessett tries to rescue the business. She leaves her small college in Seattle and travels to Las Vegas. Gideon Cage is spending a few days of vacation there. She offers to gamble with him to save her brother's firm. Hannah wins the bet, but loses the battle. Gideon didn't take over her brother's company. Now he's after her instead. Hannah's aunt was a legendary anthropologist who published findings in the 1940's about a society of Amazons that was groundbreaking. Her work continued to expand until she was was of the preeminent anthropologists of her time. She died and left all her belongings to Hannah. Now she is going down to Santa Inez, the Caribbean island where her aunt lived after she retired. When she is waiting at SeaTac for the flight, Gideon appears. He has decided to accompany her to Santa Inez no matter what she wants. Gideon's business is to buy and sell companies (think Richard Gere in Pretty Woman). It is being threatened by the son of a man who had been Gideon's mentor - until he betrayed Gideon. Hannah is a college guidance counselor and is very good at her job. She starts giving Gideon advice. He can't agree with her advice, but he keeps listening. Of course the two of them alone in her aunt's house on a tropical island is a recipe for lust - and romance. Twist of Fate is one of Jayne Ann Krentz's earlier novels when she was writing classic romance, Even so, there is some suspense included. It's quickly obvious to the experienced reader that someone is after Hannah. The book has Krentz's trademark smart, self assured woman and the man who is able to take her on. Hannah has enough issues to make her believable and Gideon is a bit over the top. I enjoyed this book and the characters. The aunt's studies are interesting with an unexpected twist before the book is done. It's good romance and an enjoyable beach read. Notice: Explicit sexual content |
