As an heiress, Victoria Huntington knows how to spot money hunters among the English aristocracy. She is in her mid-twenties and plans to never marry. But in her time, women had few opportunities. Especially women from the ton, the upper society. She has no freedom to do what she wants or find the excitement she craves. The Earl of Stonevale, Lucas Colebrook, has recently inherited the title from his uncle. His uncle had thrown the fortune away and let the lands fall into ruin. He must marry an heiress. His friend, Lady Atherton, introduces him to Vicky. He quickly learns she is more than her money. She also informs him when they meet that she will never marry. Lucas knows he cannot court her the normal way. Instead he reluctantly agrees to indulge her sense of adventure. Soon they are climbing over garden walls so she can experience things she would never be allowed to as a lady in society. The longer they are together, the more Lucas knows he has to convince Vicky to marry him. The more time Vicky spends with Lucas, the more she wants to spend. Yet she still doesn't plan to marry. She wants to maintain her independence. How can she bring her lives together? Amanda Quick's Surrender is a fun, vibrant romance set in 19th century England. Vicky's character is suitable for the 21st century reader who wants a strong, independent woman allowing herself to fall in love. Yet she is still a character that strives to maintain her standing and reputation according to society's norms of the time. Quick (aka Jayne Ann Krentz) does a good job in reconciling both personas into an uplifting romance with a good touch of suspense. Surrender is a satisfying escape book, suitable for an afternoon at the beach. Notice: Explicit sexual content |
