Small Town Girl

Romance 7/24/1999 Rating: 4 Scrolls

Tess McPhail, Mac, is a country western singing star on par with Garth Brooks, Reba McIntyre, Clint Black, etc. Her life is in Nashville running her career and the many enterprises she has started in the 18 years since she left home. She has visited home occasionally, but never for long. Now her sister Judy insists she come home for a month and take care of their mother after total hip replacement surgery.

Wintergreen is a small town in western Missouri. It's a small town that does not seem to ever change. Tess knows her Momma doesn't change. What does Momma do with the money Tess sends her? Tess returns home reluctantly. She loves Momma, it is just she hates to leave her work for over a month. Besides, she, Momma, and her sisters have very little in common any more.

Tess finds nothing has changed at Momma's house except for one thing. The nerd who lived across the alley now does the things for Momma that sons will do. He is a divorced father whose daughter loves Momma as much as he does. Tess gets real tired of hearing about Kenny Kroneck real fast.

This is a charming romance. Tess has no major conflicts with her family other than with a sister jealous of her success. She and Kenny quickly feel the attraction to each other despite the woman he has been dating. The conflict of the story is more in solving a romance between two very diverse worlds. Tess is a success who has hundreds of people depending on her for their jobs. He has a successful business and is happy in the small town.

Small Town Girl also is a well done novel about self discovery. Tess had left behind her small town background and was now all city. She once again discovers how special home can be.
