A Slip in Time

RomanceScience Fiction 11/9/1998 Rating: 4 Scrolls

In September, 1893, Julia is forced to accompany her aunt and cousins to Scotland rather than return to her family home in the Hampshires. At the Highlands castle, Dunraven, Julia is given an out of the way bedchamber that is never used.

As she settles to sleep, she is awakened by a man picking her up out of the bed and dumping her in the hallway outside the door. She quickly reenters the room, noticing it has changed from when she fell asleep. Then the air gets heavy and she drops her head. When she lifts her head again, the room is restored and the man has disappeared.

Julia has experienced her first "slip in time" After she had a few more, she speaks with the current Lord of Dunraven. He is able to explain to her what is happening, and is excited he can study the phenonmena.

As Julia slips in time for longer periods, she falls in love with Rae McKinnen, the third Lord of Dunraven. But her visit is always limited before she returns to her own time. The current Lord predicts the soon end of the time slips. What can Julia do?

I found this to be a bit slow in starting, perhaps because it was originally set in Victorian England. About a third of the way in it picked up and I really enjoyed the story. There is a cute scene when she explains to Rae about her corset, and his reaction to it. Thereafter, she is careful not to wear corsets when she knows she will be visiting him.
