Romance 3/8/2008 Rating: 3 1/2 Scrolls

Merlin's Maidens are a group of women who are extraordinary. They were taken from the streets of London while young then brought up to become spies. They are one of England's secret weapons and quite effective as well.

Shannon is one of those women. She has troubles at times with controlling her anger. When her friend Sienna was on a mission and in trouble, Shannon took off without permission to assist. Then she failed to reach her target on the next mission. Now she is afraid she may be dismissed from the Maidens. She is given another chance. She is to go to Scotland and pretend to be a governess for two children whose lives are threatened because of the secret work their Uncle does for England.

Alexandr Orlov is a spy for Russia, although he is half English. He is a rogue and a thief at times, and completely loyal. When he first met Shannon, he stole her dagger. The next time they meet he takes a bullet for her and she then nurses him to health as they sail from Ireland to England. Now he is assigned to be a tutor for two children in Scotland - along with Shannon. Can the two of them control their anger and suspicion of each other in order to keep the children and their grandmother safe?

Seduced by a Spy is a traditional boy meets girl, girl hates boy, boy is unwillingly interested in girl, then she reciprocates. (OK, woman and man...) It takes place during Regency England and in some ways has the flavor of an old fashioned Georgette Heyer romance. I cut my romance reading teeth on Heyer's novel some 40 years ago (difficult seeing as how I'm only 29). But Andrea Pickens has added the swashbuckling of the Three Musketeers and some steamy romance. It's a lot of fun and purely escapism reading.
