Taylor Stapleton's fiance eloped with her cousin. Her grandmother is dying, but wants Taylor kept safe from unsavory fortune hunting relatives. So Lady Esther arranges Taylor's marriage to Lucas Ross, a Montana rancher. Taylor wants to get out of London, over the Boston, and get her sister's babies. She and Lucas makes plans to split in Boston. But things go wrong. First, Taylor picks up another woman on the ship and becomes her protector. Victoria is single and pregnant, a reason to be ostrasized in Victorian society. Her parents refuse to acknowledge her. Taylor stops Victoria from committing suicide. They become quick friends. Taylor realizes she has someone to help with the twins after she leaves Lucas. Next, when she goes to get the babies, her wards are missing, Lucas helps Taylor follow the trail of the people who "bought" them. A friend of Lucas' comes along to help as well. Lucas has his own issues. He wants to find the man who tried to kill him and succeeded in killing the eight men who had been with him on a mission after the war. Then he wants to return to his ranch and be back on his own. He doesn't count on Taylor needing help. Nor does he guess that she doens't want to live in a city. Instead, she likes the sound of his town in the wild west, Redemption. She, Victoria, and the babies, if found, could go live there. This is fun escapism. The book is exactly what it purports to be, a frothy romance. It's decent writing and quite predictable. It's the ultimate description of a "beach book". It's an average story that is an enjoyable read. Notice: Explicit sexual content |
