All her life Lana Biel has wanted to roam the world. It is still her dream although unrealized. She stays in Vermont for her sister, Karin, and their gardening store and gift shop. But soon she will be able to go. Her best friend, Eli Ward, had been more of a stay at home guy. He is an astrophysicist and now often travels around the world following up on different meteorite sightings and finds. He is always glad to return to Vermont and Lana.

After a brief fling with a guy Lana only knew casually, she discovers she is pregnant. She doesn't know when, or if, she'll see the father again. She doesn't want to be pregnant. She dreams of going to Costa Rica. A baby would prevent her from the travel she longs for. Eli is the only person she tells when she realizes the truth about her body.

Karin and her husband Gene have been trying to have a baby. Karin is becoming obsessed. They don't want to adopt. How can Lana tell her beloved sister that she is accidentally pregnant?

Karin and Lana had a rough childhood after their mother died. Their father obviously didn't want them, but let them live in his boarding house. Karin and Lana had to look to each other for company, comfort, and support. As soon as Lana graduated from high school, Karin and Lana left Calvert to his boarding house. They didn't want to see him again.

But life, families, and friends are complicated. Calvert shows up after more than ten years. He has lost the boarding house. Eli is dating a girl who is jealous of Lana. Lana doesn't like her, either. Karin is putting pressure on her marriage due to her need to have a child and start a family. And Eli - well, Eli doesn't really like the girl he's dating, either. But Lana wants them to stay friends, nothing more. He believes it time for him to push their relationship. He has loved her since college, but Lana didn't want to ruin their friendship.

It Happened One Night is a romance - Eli and Lana's story. But Lisa Dale has added much more to this quiet novel. It is also Karin and Gene's story. It is Calvert's story. It's a story about families and love and jealousy and obsession and fear and...you get the picture, all the human emotions are tied in.

Lisa Dale takes us through Lana's pregnancy. Lives are changed during that time. Characters begin to realize their own strengths as well as fears. It Happened One Night doesn't pull the reader in and hang on tight. In fact I often had to put it down while moving and wouldn't pick it up for a couple days. Yet by the time the reader has finished, it comes together. It has a happy, real life ending that shows that life isn't perfect but their love is strong.

Quiet and charming.
