A couple years earlier Fallon Jones decided the small off-beat community Scargill Cove was the best place to set up headquarters for his family detective agency. J&J investigations had been established over 100 years earlier in London. Now it's based in Northern California. There, Fallon has been able to isolate himself from people and take advantage of the psychic paranormal qualities of the area. Isabella Valdez is being chased. Someone tried to set her up as a paranormal weapons black market operative. Raised on conspiracy theories, she is able to escape. After a near thing in Phoenix, she follows her grandmother's advice. She goes to Scargill Cove to find Fallon Jones. She takes a job in the local restaurant for a short time, then marches up the stairs to his office and announces she is his new office manager. She also plans to be an investigator, but she keeps that quiet to start. There's a difference when Isabella is in the office. Things are brighter, calmer. Fallon can feel the difference. Something about this woman attracts him. After the affair three years earlier, he hadn't thought anyone could make him feel like this again. Much to his disgust, Isabella accepts a job to announce there isn't a ghost in an old house. But once there, she's in danger. She realizes something is wrong and calls him in. They find an old Victorian artifact, a paranormal weapon that affects anyone around it. Unfortunately, a serial killer is using it. There are more secrets around Scargill Cove. Now Fallon and Isabella have to bring them to light without getting killed or injured themselves. Can they do that and admit the romantic forces growing between them? In Too Deep is the 13th Arcane Society novel by Jayne Ann Krentz (including titles under her names Amanda Quick and Jayne Castle). Unfortunately, In Too Deep is a victim of her own marketing. For the last few years she's been releasing at least three novels a year, one under each name. This one feels rushed. There is more that could have been explored in the Victorian artifacts at the present, although I'm sure they will be key in the next novel, Quicksilver by Amanda Quick. I was expecting more from the romance between Fallon and Isabella. In books you have conflict, either external and/or internal. While there is external conflict, there's not enough internal. Fallon is a brooder - part of the way his mind and talent work. There isn't much of internal questioning on either's part. We really don't learn who the characters are. Jayne Ann Krentz has all the elements for a good novel here. But they're rushed and on the surface. I was wanting more and I know she's capable of it. This is light paranormal romantic suspense that entertains but not much more. Notice: Non-graphic violence, Strong sexual content |
