Romance 11/19/1998 Rating: 3 Scrolls

Over the years I have read and enjoyed many romance time travel stories. Usually a modern day woman ends up going back in time or pulling a man forward to her time. This is the first time I have read one where a modern day "surfer dude" was pulled back to the past.

Sammy Bergen, a martial arts master, hears a woman screaming and rides on his Harley Davidson to rescue her. He travels from 1993 Los Angeles to 809 Ireland during the time of Viking invasions. He meets Brianna, the singing druidess magician who had unwittingly pulled him to her time.

When Sammy and Brianna talk, they can understand each other. But Sammy cannot understand the Gaelic everyone else in the small monastary village speaks, nor can they understand him. His motorcycle appears as a black beast to them.

Brianna is rebuffing the neighboring king who wants her as his second wife. She is the healer of the village, along with her uncle. Her father is the abbott, and her twin brother wants to become a warrior rather than a monk.

I kept getting frustrated with Sammy's character. He knew some things, like when he was in Ireland, but didn't know other obvious things. Throughout the book his favorite words were "dude" when talking about the king and "babe" when talking about or to Brianna. Also, the ending was too pat. Things just suddenly were done magically. Nice romance, but not a great book.
