Hot IceNora Roberts
Rich and bored Whitney MacAllister is driving home in Manhattan when a man on the run jumps into her car and tells her to "move"! Doug Lord entered her life in a flash. He drove away the boredom. Doug, an admitted thief, is on the run from a dangerous Mafia-type godfather named Dmitri. Doug has some stolen letters that could make his fortune. Dmitri wants the letters for the treasure they can locate. When some of Dmitri's hoodlums break into her apartment that evening. Whitney joins Doug. Besides, Doug owes her for the gunshot windshield and the broken antiques when the gunmen entered the apartment. The tab keeps growing. Within a couple days, they are in Madagascar. They are looking for a hidden cache of jewels from the French Revolution. The jewels may have belonged to Marie Antoinette. But Dmitri's men are right behind them. Doug and Whitney never get far before the gunmen, Remo and Barnes, catch up. While Hot Ice kept moving all through the tale, I didn't care if I stayed with it or not. The descriptions of Madagascar are lush and appealing. The treasure Whitney and Doug are seeking in Hot Ice sparks the imagination. The characters don't come to life. I didn't mind if I skipped parts of the novel. I couldn't get involved with the story. Overall, Hot Ice is a disappointing novel compared to most of Roberts' work.
