Highland Velvet

Jude Deveraux

 9/12/1998

In this historical novel, Stephen Montgomery is ordered by the king of England to marry a Scots laird. Bronwyn was named the MacArran, the laird, by her father over her older brother. She is very devoted to her clan. But she does not want to marry an Englishman!

The English still wear heavy armor. They face each other in battle. The Scots wear their kilts, plaids, and loose shirts. They run and hide and comoflague themselves in battle. When Stephen marries and returns to Scotland with the unexpectedly beautiful Bronwyn, he plans on teaching those ignorant Scots the proper way to be men, to treat their women, and to fight. She will not trust this fascinating man with her clan. She is the laird, not he.

Stephen is one of Jude Deveraux's heartbreaking Montgomery men. We meet men and women from this family from England's deep history (long before Stephen and his brothers) up to present day. What woman would not want to meet one of the Montgomerys...unless they meet the Taggert cousins.

Deveraux does her research when she writes historical novels. This one is the second of four novels about these mid-evil Montgomery brothers and their sister Mary. Most of the action takes place in Scotland. The reader learns why Scots wear plaids and what is (or isn't) worn under a kilt.
