This group of short stories are all romances surrounded by a family. They are set in historical England, mid-1800's Boston, late 1800's Kentucky, and modern day South Carolina. Each deals with family life in different ways. "Meggie's Baby" by Denise Domning is about the English alderman and his wife who could not have children. The wife, Meggie, stands up for an abused widow who requests Meggie take care of her small daughter should she die. Meggie does not believe the woman will die, but accedes to the request. "Sunshine" by Bronwyn Williams is the one my mother enjoyed the most. A man learns about family life when he rescues his nephew when his brother and sister-in-law are dead. Rosie is the runaway who helps him care for the baby as they cross the mountains back to his father's home. The other two stories included are "The Awakening" by Brenda Joyce and "Hunter's Moon" by Fern Michaels. Each story uses a different family premise. These are all light, enjoyable reading. This is a good one to take along when you need something to read that does not require a lot of concentration. |
