Florie Gilder had learned her stepfather's trade. She is a goldsmith - although still a journeyman and not yet a master. Even so, much of the work her stepfather sells these days is crafted by Florie. Now she has gone to the fair in Selkirk to sell her stepfather's wares. She has another mission as well - to find her read father. But while she is away from the table, their slave sold her personal bauble of gold - the pomander that can help her identify her father. When Florie tries to get the pomander back, the Lady Mavis refuses to return it. Florie snatches the pomander, throws the refund money at Lady Mavis, and runs. Soon she is in the woods, trying to hide from Sir Gilbert's, Mavis' husband, soldiers. Rane MacAllister is one of Sir Gilbert's huntsmen. He also poaches the wildlife to feed the local croftsmen and peasants. Lady Mavis' greed has impoverished the area with her husband's apparent approval. Unfortunately, his catch if Florie. The color of her dress is similar to the coat of a deer. He has already started the release when he realizes his prey his human, and is able to pull the bow to only wound her instead of killing her. Florie knows she can't hide from Lady Mavis or Sir Gilbert's men with a wounded leg. She claims 40 days sanctuary at the nearby, abandoned church. Rane helps her claim sanctuary and bind up her leg. Then he is assigned to make sure she doesn't escape before her sanctuary is up. Rane has always been a ladies man. Now, though, there is just one maid who catches his attention. But he nearly killed her and now has to guard her. He can't let himself get close - nor can he stay away. Captured by Desire is a historical romance set in mid 1500's England. Kira Morgan pulls in the "court" of the time - sanctuary - to be the background of Captured by Desire. When I started the book I was pulled in quickly - then almost as quickly lost interest. When I picked it up, I enjoyed it. Then I would lay it down for days, choosing something else instead. By the time I was (finally) half way through, I just wanted to finish. The book is about 350 pages or larger font type with plenty of white space, so the physical reading isn't a challenge. I just couldn't get myself interested enough in it to hold my attention. I skimmed the last half of the book. Kira Morgan's writing is pleasant and she has studied her time period. The reader who like medieval romances may like Captured by Desire more than I.
