Sloan Fairchild owns a bed and breakfast in San Francisco. Her best friend asks her to break her own rule and accept a single male boarder for a while. This man, Carter Madison, is a writer and engaged to her friend. He wants to get away before the wedding to finish his current novel without interruption. Sloan is too busy with her bed and breakfast to want a man in her life. She has had no success with love in the past and now just wants to be left to herself. But Carter Madison affects her in ways she could not have guessed. She immediately feels the attraction to him. She soon discovers he is also attracted. There is no way Sloan and Carter can get together. Her friend, his fiancee, is a widow with two small sons. The marriage is to protect her and give the boys a father. There is not a big romance between she and Carter. Yet neither Sloan nor Carter will hurt her. They may fall in love; she is too important to either of them to hurt. This tale is pleasant. I feel Sloan and Carter both are rather wishy washy about the best friend. The whole story seems contrived even if engaging. It's a light romance with no pretense of depth.
