Breath of Magic

Romance8/7/2002 Rating: 4 Scrolls

Arian Whitewood is about to be convicted of practicing witchcraft. In 1689 Salem, Massachusettes, this is not safe. She cannot deny she is able to practice witchcraft, despite her Puritan beliefs. She was seen as she practiced riding her broom. As she is dunked into the water she grabs her lucky amulet and whispers a spell. Next thing she knows, she is riding her broom over a strange landscape full of...towers.

Tristan Lennox is a young billionaire trying to discover true magic. He enjoys debunking all claims to supernatural powers. When Arian lands in the middle of his latest "contest", his life is in for a major change. He knows there is no such thing as magic. Yet he cannot shake her, get her to admit how she faked her entrance. His scientists are not able to carbon date the broom. A deep search for records on her past life show nothing.

Arian is totally shaken and out of her depth. Tristan frightens her. She is unable to convince him of her innocence. He is sceptical of every person he meets. She also has to learn how to exist in this new time. She does not want to admit where her past really lies, nor does she want to admit to real magic. Instead, she wants to figure out what she will be able to do next.

This is a charming, thoroughly amusing romance. The romance is formulamatic and predictable, although there are some interesting twists on Arian's story. The scene early in the book when she is trying to find the chamber pot is funny, especially after she discovers the bathroom and its facilities. Tristan's vulnerable side helps lighten his character, but it is still a bit stiff. This is a fun bit of fluff.
