Accidental Angel

Tess Thompson

1/19/2003

Dr. Shane Madden is the head of an Emergency Room in a hospital in Colorado. He is dating Elizabeth, the beautiful, spoiled daughter of the Chief of Staff and owner of the hospital. On his way to a charity ball his car slid off the snowy road and over the embankment. He was fortunate that a nurse from his hospital was behind him. Dena Quinn stopped and was able to get him from the BMW before it caught on fire.

Dena is a nurse on the run. She was on her way to Canada when she stopped in this small Colorado town. The hospital needed pediatric nurses, she needed a job. She found she loved it and the children love her. She doesn't plan to get involved, especially with men. She wants to be herself.

Shane finds himself attracted to this vision who rescued him. After his discharge from the hospital he looks for her. Once he finds her, he determines not to let her leave too quickly. She determines to stay away from the attractive doctor. She knows what it is like to live with a controlling, good-looking physician. She won't do it again.

This short novel is a comfortable romance. It is too brief, though. The characters get a short treatment of their past or emotions. They are not well developed. The promise is there but not carried through. For example, we meet Shane's free-spirited mother early in the book. Hollywood loves her family. When she meets Elizabeth, she immediately reacts negatively. Hollywood's character is briefly described, along with her antipathy. Yet it is immediately dropped and soon Hollywood is gone and forgotten until the end of the book.

Dena's relationship with her ex-husband, Shane's with Elizabeth, Shane's with his friend Patrick, and others are briefly touched upon but are not fulfilled. There is something wrong in the hospital, but the reader doesn't know anything is out of the ordinary until three-fourths of the way through the novel. I found this a book of promise that needs to be filled out.
