Vet in a SpinJames Herriott
This is another of the English veterinarian's heartwarming memoirs. He has entered the RAF at the onset of World War II. This book travels back and forth from his early pilot training to his earlier days as a vet in Darrowby. We meet his flight instructor. After listening to this superior, Herriott is certain he will never qualify as a pilot. The people he meets during his training remind him of people he had met in Darrowby. We learn the story of Jake the Pram dog, Oscar the cat, a school buddy of Herriott's, the old Darrowby farmer and his dog in retirement, and many others. These people are brought to life in that charming manner Herriott has used in his previous books as well. I value Herriott's books in my permanent collection. This one stands right up with the earlier ones. His folksy storytelling manner make the books charming. This one has more stories in the same vein.
Currently this book is out of print, except for an audiotape version that is available at |
