No, this isn't the grammar book that has been so popular, Eat Shoots and Leaves. The author and the subtitle say it all about this humorous book. This book is full of the mistakes, fun twists, typographical errors, misstatements, puns, acronyms, dialects, tautologies, and other crap uses of the richness of the English language. One purpose of this book is to remind the reader that although grammar is necessary in our language, every day use is completely different. This is one of those books the reader can open at random and find a new tidbit. Sections have titles like "Play On Words, Play On" , "Choose Your Words With Care", "Contemporary Proverbs", and "In Deference of Hackneyed Phrases". Our English language is adaptable and rich. But not only does it get better through proper use, it flourishes through improper use as well. Who can't chuckle when reading a quote of a mixed up statement from someone like Dan Quayle - "I have made good judgements in the past. I have made good judgements in the future." Huh? Anyway, you'll have made a good judgement if you pick this small volume up and entertain yourself with it. |
