Florence Rubrick was a New Zealand party member during World War II. She and her husband lived on the South Island in the mountains on a sheep farm. They also had two men working on a very hush hush project for the war effort. Then Florence disappeared. No one realized it for a few days. Once discovered, no one could find her. A few weeks later her body was found stuffed into the middle of a bale of wool. Over a year later Detective Allyne is called in to investigate. There is still the possibility of espionage going on. The murder may be connected. He is in New Zealand on assignment during the war. He visits Mount Moon to see if he can discover who killed Mrs. Rubrick and who is attempting to leak secrets to the Germans about the secret project. Mr. Rubrick died shortly after his wife. The people living on the farm now include Fabian Losse and Douglas Grace, the two men working on the project, Ursula Harme, Mrs. Rubrick's ward, Terence Lynne, Mrs. Rubrick's secretary/now gardener, Markins the butler, Mrs. Duck the cook, and Mrs. Aceworthy, the chaperone. Except for Mrs. Aceworthy, this is the same group of people who lived at Mount Moon when the murder occured. Each person gives their viewpoint of Mrs. Rubrick in general and the night of the murder in specifics. Allyne now has to take the stories and find the facts of what did happen that night. This interesting novel also gives first hand insight of feelings during World War II. This farm is cut off from the world in general, yet the conflict settles right in with them, too. Allyne finds he has some undercover help as he works out this puzzle. He believes he knows who is the murderer and possible spy; now he has to prove it. |
