Vahalla RisingClive Cussler
Dirk Pitt is on a NUMA exploration ship in the Pacific when he spots a fire north of them. A cruise ship on her maiden voyage caught on fire. Over 2,000 people are on board By the time his ship arrives to help, as well as calling for other ships to come in, some people on board have died. But they are able to rescure most of the passengers and crew. Kelly Egan and her Nobel prize winning father are on the premiere cruise of the Emerald Dolphin. He designed the new technology that is powering the ship. When they are waiting to be rescued, two men come up and attack Dr. Egan, trying to steal his briefcase. He dies saving it and passes it on to Kelly. While on the NUMA rescue ship, one of the men tries to wrestle the briefcase from her again. Dirk Pitt is able to rescue her and gets pulled into a fantastic adventure. He calls on his friend Al Giordino. Together they start investigating what happened to the Emerald Dolphin. Who wants to stop the new technology that powers it and a new luxury submarine? They discover Dr. Egan's briefcase is empty. Later oil spills out of it. What is in this briefcase that made it so valuable? This is the first Clive Cussler novel I have read. I was immediately sucked right in. At times the story is fantastic, but Cussler has a knack of making it believable. It is well paced. Although I hadn't met Dirk Pitt or Al Giordino, Valhalla Rising describes them well enough for the new reader (me) without overdoing them for the old reader who has followed the series from the beginning. While I'm still in school I won't be able to pick up too many of these, but you can bet I'll be reading more Dirk Pitt novels. You can find more about this book at The Mediterrean Caper |
