Farrell has approached the CIA to see if he can borrow Mrs. Pollifax. He has agreed to go to Jordan to obtain the only copy of a smuggled manuscript. The author was recently killed in Iraq because of his comments and opinions against Saddam Hussein's government. Farrell had been a friend of the author and wants to free his words. He needs Mrs. Pollifax as a cover, the "innocent tourist" in Jordan. Soon he and Mrs. Pollifax are flying to Amsterdam, then to the Middle East. When they arrived in Jordan, Mrs. Pollifax discovers her annoying seat mate has left a souvenir in her carry on bag. Then someone searches her hotel room. Soon Farrell and the Duchess are involved in more than having a smuggled manuscript handed off. They do not realize and international terrorist has escaped and was masquerading as a souvenir salesman. They are followed around Jordan. Soon they find a body. Another man rushes by them and disappears. Some men in a rust red car appear wherever they are. The contact with the manuscript never appears. This is a fast paced, intriguing novel. Mrs. Pollifax is observant but has no idea that she is mixed up in more than the retrieval of a manuscript. Because of her quick wits she and Farrell are able to avoid some problems that could not be foreseen. This is a novel to enjoy. |
