In the mornings the older woman went to St. Matthew's church to fix the flowers, straighten up, and generally assist the church. This morning, Miss Wharton and her young companion found more than they could handle. Two bodies are in the small vestry, their throats cut in an apparent murder, suicide combination. Inspector Dalgliesh is ready to head the new special crimes division of Scotland Yard. Since the apparent suicide was a Minister of the Court, his team was brought in a few days before their official start date. He, Massingham, and Miskin investigate all the family members and friends. All supply alibis, often corroborating someone else's story. The team is certain it was murder, not a suicide. Now they have to find the evidence to prove their convictions. James leads us all over while solving this murder. The victim's wife, her lover, her brother, the victim's daughter, her lover, and fellow Ministry members are all checked. Many different motives are uncovered. Whose motive was enough to kill? This is a dark, serious mystery with its humerous moments. It is well crafted. Once the murderer is revealed to us, the reader, there is still much more to go before he can be apprehended. Will he kill again in the meantime? The mystery reader will enjoy this one. It leads us down many a path trying to figure the real killer. Notice: Graphic violence |
