Taking the FifthJ.A. Jance
J.P. Beaumont is a homicide detective in Seattle. A body has been found in the seamy section of the city. The body had been struck with an object leaving odd shaped holes. The man appeared to have died from a massive blow. When J.P. and his partner start investigating, they discover another death that may or may not have been natural. The dead man's house partner died of AIDS...maybe. The deceased had worked for the local traveling entertainment company who has a road show in town. Jasmine Hall is a come-back singer. She had been a rock singer who ruined her life with drugs. She went to Betty Ford and now is living clean and changing the direction of her singing career. J.P. attends the show and is amazed at the woman's talent and show. He finds himself going with her to dinner and becominf attracted. The next day, though, he discovers it was her shoe and her hair discovered at the murder site. A drug connection is found. Jasmine is the prime suspect. Once again J.P. is attracted to a woman with a shady presence. Can he prove whether or not she is the killer? Once again J.A. Jance pleases. Taking the Fifth is a good detective mystery that also enhances the personalities of the ongoing characters. The mystery is the focus. The book is logical and thought through well. The reader is drawn into trying to figure what is happening. Who is smuggling drugs and killing others to hide the fact?
