Sticks and SconesDiane Mott Davidson
Goldy Shulz wakes up early one Colorado February morning to a stealthy noise outside. She begins to wonder if she imagined it when someone shoots out the picture window in her house. Her husband is in New Jersey, her 15-year-old son is upstairs, and now the arctic air is filling her home. She immediately calls her husband's co-workers, the police. She has two catering duties during the week at the local castle. The couple there are having a luncheon early int he week for fundraisers, then later in the week the prep school fencing club is having their award ceremony dinner in their new conference center. Sukie and Eliot Hyde, the owners of the castle, welcome her and Arch to stay with them. Tom leaves New Jersey and heads home. As she arrives at the Hyde's, she receives a phone call. Her abusive ex-husband is out of jail. Would he have shot out her window? - no, not his style. The next morning she stops by the chapel to set up for the fund raiser. She looks in the creek. There she sees the body of the theif her husband went to New Jersey to find. Instead, someone else found him and killed him. The first officer on the scene after she calls it in is Tom just returned from New Jersey. As he walkds toward her, she watches in horror as a bullte rips through his shoulder. She calls 911 again, then tries to staunch the bleeding while waiting for the paramedics to arrive. She knows his wound is life threatening. The weeks gets weirder for Goldy. Now she has to deal with Tom's injuries, her ex-husband and his new girlfriend, two Anglophile catering events, living in a strange home while waiting for her own to be repaired, and more attacks on her home. She knows they are all tied together. If she pokes her nose in the wrong place, though, her life may be endangered as well. Sticks and Scones is a but of fluff, a cozy mystery. There are delicious sounding recipes inserted in pages between the story. The novel pulls in unexpected strings. This is fun, not demanding. While away a few hours with this, or any of the Goldy Schulz novels. You can find more about Sticks and Scones at Catering to Nobody |
