After calling off her wedding at the altar three months earlier (with good cause), Sophie Metropolis has left the family restaurant and now works for her Uncle Spyros. She is his only full time private investigator. She's not licensed yet. She has to work and learn first before the State of New York will issue one to her. One day while Uncle Spyros is gone, a man comes in asking to have his wife investigated. Sophie takes the job and heads over to the hotel with the camera she "borrowed" from her brother. She sees the woman enter the hotel room. When she sneaks up to the window to take more incriminating pictures, gunshots break the window - and the camera. When she finally goes into the room, there's a dead man on the floor. But when the police arrive the body is gone. Sophie knows that's the kind of luck she's been having. As well as the cheating, disappearing spouse, Sophie is asked to check out the "vampire's" house. The man hasn't been seen in days. Instead, his nephew who looks as creepy as he is seen going in and out. To add to her misery, her mother's best friend's dog is missing. Muffy has taken more than one bite at Sophie so she's rather glad it's gone. But her Greek mother is good with the guilt. Sophie looks for Muffy, too. What's right in Sophie's life? She's the owner of a three story, six unit apartment building. It was a wedding present from her family. She kept it after she broke off with the cheating Thomas. She still has most of the wedding presents, too, especially the ones from his family. She also has a 60's Mustang convertible - ok, it needs work. Then there is Porter, the mysterious man with the Australian accent who seems to be looking out for her. She'd really like him to be looking closer, but he keeps backing off. Sophie Metropolis has been compared to a cross between the Stephanie Plum series and the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding. That description is certainly on the mark. Sophie isn't inept, but certainly has bad luck. She has a recent past history that has totally changed her life, so now she's a private investigator. Tori Carrington is the pseudonym for Lori and Tony Karayianni, a Greek couple who are able to write knowledgeably about the American Greek culture. No wonder Sophie's life sounds real. The mystery has some good twists and turns. Although this is a cozy mystery full of humor, there is a decent mystery as well. It's a good combination of Sophie's personal story and the mystery. It's fun - not compelling. For good, relaxing escape, you'll do well with Sophie Metropolis. Notice: Non-graphic , Suggestive dialogue or situations |
