This is the first novel by Carol Higgins Clark that I have read. I have enjoyed her mother's (Mary Higgins Clark) mysteries for years. Regan Reilly is a female private detective from California who has flown to Miami to be in a friend's wedding. While there, she meets her friend's old uncle who is an inventor. And he has invented snag-proof, run-proof, destruction-proof panty hose. Think how great that would be to own a pair or two of those! Uncle Ritchie is trying to sell his panty hose to buy the old folks apartment complex where he lives. If he can't, developers will buy it and evict the current tenants to tear it down. His panty hose should provide the money needed, if they live up to their claim. The first night Regan is walking with Uncle Ritchie to catch a cab someone tries to run them down with a car. Was it an accident or deliberate? Was the apartment complex landlady's death a year previous an accident or murder? Are Uncle Ritchie's panty hose really indestructable? This is a light, humorous read. None of the characters are well defined, in my opinion. Regan Reilly is shaped and is fun, but her essence is not in this book. If she is in others of Ms. Clark's, perhaps she is more fleshed out. While I read the book quickly, it definitely lacked the quality of a "must read." It jumps around a lot, and I was not always sure who was who, even at the end. The book's light tone makes it very readable. The mystery has many twists and turns. Unfortunately, I was able to figure them out fairly easily. |
