Hester Latterly takes a short term, private nursing position. She is hired to accompany an older lady from Edinburg, Scotland, to London to visit her pregnant daughter. The woman dies on the train while under Hester's supervision. Hester then discovers some unexplained jewelry in her luggage. Before she and Callandra can return it, Hester is arrested for thievery, then murder. Callandra, William Monk, and Oliver Rathbone band together to save Hester. From her story, the only possible suspects are members of the lady's very wealthy, very respectable family. The oldest brother is the Procurator Fiscal, in a legal position to judge whether cases should go to court. The other children and their spouses are involved in the family business, a book printing company. The uncle, their dead father's brother, lives with them and is always drunk. None of them seems to have a motive, yet one of them had to have killed their mother. Again Anne Perry takes Victorian life and shows the dark side that is so often hidden. There are many hidden secrets within this family. The description of prison while Hester spends time there sends chills down the spine. The relationship between Hester and William changes, and their perspective of each other changes. Oliver begins to understand how important Hester is to him. This is a wonderful stand alone mystery and a continuation of the William/Hester/Oliver story. |
