Reunion in Death

J.D. Robb
aka Nora Roberts

Mystery & Suspense1/18/2004

Eve Dallas is a homicide detective in New York City in the late 2050's. She has just returned from a relaxing vacation with her husband, Roarke. For a few minutes she has softened - just a little. But don't expect that to last long.

A successful man comes home to his "surprise" birthday party with around 100 people present. He is given a glass of champagne and immediately dies of poisoning. Dallas and her aide, Peabody, are called in on the case. After some investigation, Dallas is able to determine who the killer is. Unfortunately, all she has to do now is locate and catch her before she poisons again.

Dallas has a history with the suspected woman. Dallas had been one of the primary detectives when the woman, Julie Dockport, was put in jail the first time after murdering three husbands. But only one of them could be proven. Since then Dockport became a model prisoner and was released on parole after ten years. Now she has returned to New York City to continue with her vengence against men and to get revenge on Dallas.

To complicate matters, Peabody's Free Age parents are in New York visiting. Their true intention is to see how Peabody is doing with her life and job, and to check out Dallas. They also are comfortable, loving people that Dallas doesn't understand. Also, Dallas has to face her own past when she has to go to Texas to follow up a lead on Dockport. Roarke makes sure he is with her all the way as she comes against her private demons.

Reunion in Death - the title reflects the different plot lines perfectly. Peabody's parents are once again together with their daughter. Dockport returns to pit herself against Dallas again. Dallas has to reunite the child she was with the adult she is now. Reunion in Death is well done, crafted nicely. The different story lines pull together into a tight novel that keeps the reader's attention. Enjoy.
