Lawrence Coombs has been acquitted of rape and beating a woman. Another woman is in a coma so prosecutors cannot prove he did that, either. The know he is a sadistic rapist, but his charm wins the day in the court room. The night after he was acquitted, three masked people, one a woman, kidnapped him, stripped him, and repaid his violence, leaving his tied naked to a park bench for someone to find in the morning. The subsequent nights the vigilante group strikes again, targeting people known to be guilty but allowed to go free from the judicial system. Dixie Flanagan, a bounty hunter in Houston, testified against Coombs and is as angry at anyone at the verdict. But she can only wait until he charms and attacks another woman. In the meantime, she is doing duty as a body guard for an actress' 16-year-old independent daughter. Before coming to Texas the actress was being stalked. When her daughter was threatened, she decided to act. Now Dixie is Sarina's bodyguard during the days. The job isn't easy as Sarina is trying to follow a career path that her mother doesn't approve and uses Dixie to help her sneak to meet the people she knows can get her started on her chosen career behind the scenes in film making . Dixie is afraid her friend Brenda may be part of the vigilante group. Brenda was the prosecutor in the Lawrence Coombs case and he quietly threatened her as he left the courtroom after his not guilty verdict. Dixie is also trying to build a relationship with Parker Dann. She met Parker a short time earlier while working on another case. Parker has trouble with her work and the danger she is often in. Now Dixie is trying to juggle a strong-minded young woman, find the mother's stalker, talk with her friend, and be romantic with Parker for Valentine's Day. To increase the difficulties, she doesn't know that Lawrence Coombs is certain she was one of the vigilantes and plans on obtaining his revenge. Which will be successful and which will go down in flames? Rage Factor is a well crafted tale. Chris Rogers keeps the suspense going throughout the book, building the chill around the Coombs character as he stalks Dixie. Sarina is a believable 16-year-old trying to follow her own dream. She is interested in the world of movie special effects, so there is an interesting side story about how special effects are created. The build up of the members of the vigilante group is handled well, with the reader wondering until the end who the members really are. The violence in the book is vivid enough to cause shivers, especially the rape scenes. Rage Factor examines vigilantism and revenge, showing both side of the coin. The reader wants to cheer the vigilantes yet at the same time wants to bring them down for their own acts. Notice: Graphic violence, Strong sexual content |
