Kadi is insistent she leave the United States and return to Africa and Ubangiba to help her cousin, the man about to be crowned king of the country. Sammy has heard of rumors circulating that could undermine his leadership and his attempt to restore his country to be self-sustaining once more.

Emily Pollifax and her husband Cyrus refuse to allow their friend to return alone to Ubangiba. There is danger there for her that has yet to be revealed. That is why they brought her to the United States in the first place. He is laid up with a broken leg. Mrs. Pollifax accompanies the younger woman on her trip home.

They arrive just after another "Lion Killer" murder has occurred. These appear to be ritualistic, religious acts that are a protest against Sammy's rule. Or are they political? Mrs. Pollifax knows she needs the truth if she is to protect Kadi and help Sammy restore his country.

Once again the elderly, but ageless, Emily Pollifax, is involved in a fun, fluff mystery. Gilman puts together a good mystery in her cozy world. Overall this novel is average. The mystery has some twists that may keep the reader guessing. I figured out who the killer was because these books are formulaic, yet I kept discounting that person as well. I was right for the wrong reasons.
