When she was a new rookie on the New York City police force in the early 2050's, Eve Dallas happened to uncover a pedophile and his kidnapped girls. Isaac McQueen is a monster who abducted early teen girls and kept them for his pleasure. He was put in prison and Dallas was on her way to bigger jobs in the force. Dallas is working on some paperwork when a distraught man runs into her office. McQueen is out and has the man's girlfriend. McQueen threatens to kill her if Dallas doesn't show up immediately. By the time she gets to the apartment, McQueen is gone. But she has received his message - he has escaped from jail again and he's going back to his old pleasures. Now he is adding her into the mix because he wants revenge. He surfaces again in Dallas, Texas. Roarke points out that McQueen had a chance to study her in jail and probably knows how she was found in the southern city as a battered child. The FBI are also involved. Dallas, Roarke, and the FBI agents go to Texas. They meet with the Dallas police department to set up the operation. The first thing he did was kidnap one of his previous victims who is now a rape counselor. Dallas knows she is just bait. Unfortunately, they can't find McQueen before he kidnaps a young girl and tortures her. But he starts taunting Dallas. Now he wants attention as well as his little girls. He also keeps an older companion, a "mommy" figure to help him. Dallas is sure that if they can track down this woman, they can track him down. It's only later in the case that Dallas discovers she has a past connection with his current companion as well. The woman is as corrupt as McQueen. She helps kidnap his girls for him. She doesn't realize he will kill her when he's done, too. Fast paced and hard hitting, New York to Dallas is superb. There is one obvious thread that the reader of this series will catch almost immediately. But the rest... J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) has pulled together Dallas and Roarke more solidly in this book. They need each other's strength to solve this mystery. Because of her past, Dallas the city is an important back drop to this novel. It brings back memories of another pedophile, which makes it harder for her to deal with all the threads. It also makes her stronger. Then there is the humor of Dallas' reaction to the city itself. She constantly complains that it's a weird city, forever remaking itself and feeling unfamiliar. She wants to return to New York Most of the regular characters are left behind in New York City, but they still appear electronically throughout the story. A new reader to the series will appreciate New York to Dallas without having read earlier books. Enough is explained to bring the new reader up to date. The readers like me who know their whole personal stories that have built since Naked in Death also can appreciate New York to Dallas. It's keeps the reader on edge and jumpy. It twists at the emotions. It's just a good novel. But experienced readers may miss the book - for whatever reason, Robb decided not to use "In Death" in the title. I thought it was a Roberts romantic suspense earlier in the year. I think I miss the theme. But I recommend you don't miss the book.
