Night WorkLaurie R. King
The men in San Francisco have an unusual problem. The Ladies of Perpetual Disgruntlement are attacking men who are seen abasing women. After a number of men are found stripped, hands duct-taped, and tied up for public humiliation, the jokes abound in San Francisco. Kate Martinelli gets involved when a man is found dead in a similar manner. After another murder, then another, Kate and her partner know they are looking for vigilantes. They are fairly certain they are looking for females. Kate is concerned because the profile they are building could easily fit one of her friends. In this search she learns about the different violent goddesses in religions, especially Eastern religions. The vigilante mystery is well done. I had trouble getting past the personal story of Kate and Lee to get to the mystery because the mystery kept pulling me in. This is one of King's Kate Martinelli series. Kate is a hard, female police detective who gets involved in high profile cases. Often her personal life gets involved as well. This time one of her friends, the gay activist minister Ros Hall, is the focus of the personal involvement.
