Murder List

Julie Garwood

Mystery & SuspenseRomance 8/13/2007

Regan Madison runs the charity foundation division of her family's hotel empire. Two of her older brothers run the business. The third is a race car driver who is also involved and a voting partner. She is based in Chicago, where she grew up. She is still close to her best friends from kindergarten, Sophie and Cordie. When Sophie suggests they try to get some information on a self-help guru that is probably a conman, both agree to help.

The night of the reception, Regan walks out to her car in the rain and dark. She realizes a man may be stalking her, so she runs to her car. Her injured knee collapses, then she calls for help. Others come help her get to her car and home. She doesn't see the man pick up a folder she had dropped.

A week later she receives an email from her own cell phone. It is the picture of a dead naked man hanging from a rafter. She recognizes him as the policeman who had antagonized her the week before. The Chicago police are called in. Her brothers Aiden and Spencer fly in from their corners of the world while Walker insists she join him on his race car circuit. Although she gives in to her brothers on most things, on this she refuses. So she has police protection.

Alec Buchanan has just put in his notice with the Chicago Police so he can go to the FBI. His boss, who dislikes him and is upset that Alec has made him look bad, assigns Alec to the boring duty of a spoiled woman's bodyguard for the next three weeks. It doesn't take Alec long to realize that Regan isn't spoiled, is in definite danger from a stalker, and is an attractive danger to his peace of mind.

Murder List has a fun premise of just that - a murder list. The self-help guru had the audience each fill out a list of people they wished weren't in their lives. Regan listed the people who had annoyed her that day. But she didn't get a chance to burn her list with everyone else. So the stalker took on her list and started killing the people off for her. Julie Garwood has crafted a quick paced romantic suspense that has its twists and turns. Although the stalker is revealed about three quarters of the way through, the reason doesn't come out until the end and is an unexpected twist.

Although intense, the book retains the lighter touch of a good romantic suspense novel. Murder List is a good book for getting away fromt he world for a while.
