Cool book! One of the main characters is a Democrat running for the office of President who will remind many Americans of President Bill Clinton. Yet this was written in the late 80's, while the President was still building his reputation as national public figure. This is a well written mystery. I thought I knew "who done it" by the time I finished, and was right. Until the character admitted it, though, I could not be absolutely positive. This story, like any good mystery, has lots of ins and outs. I knew if I could find the right thread, it would untangle. Read it if you like mysteries. It also provides an interesting picture of what is needed to be a presidential candidate in the United States. The candidate talks about the need to position himself years before to be in the right places at the right times to reach a presidential goal. As the focus of the murder is pointed to his family, his whole campaign is threatened even though he personally was not the murderer. The public persona and the behind the scenes real family are contrasted well. Another bonus for me was having been to Washington D.C. and the Kennedy Center recently. I was able to picture most the places being referred to. Early in the book, when the main character took his dog for a walk from Georgetown by the Watergate Hotel to the Kennedy Center, I was able to picture the approximate route. |
