Patricia Anne Hollowell has been married 40 years, has raised her children, retired from teaching school, and is quietly happy adjusting to her new life. Mary Alice Crane, Patricia Anne's sister, has been widowed three times, has raised her children, and is loudly and flamboyantly enjoying life. Mary Alice, "Sister", drags Patricia Anne, "Mouse" to see her new purchase. It is a cowboy bar that Sister and her current boyfriend frequent called the Skoot 'n Boot. It is a thriving business just outside Birmingham, Alabama. When they return to the Skoot the next day, they find the murdered body of the former owner hanging in the wishing well. The day after that they discover the Skoot has been ransacked. Then the bad weather rolls in. A tornado takes out one side of the Skoot, dropping the roof at an angle. Perhaps it wasn't such a good idea for Sister to buy the Skoot 'n Boot after all... Murder on a Girls' Night Out is a fun cozy mystery with lots of fluff throughout the story. The mystery is well conceived and the only reason the reader might figure parts of it out is that there are only a limited number of characters to choose from. Readers used to this genre will know the clues to watch. The novel by Anne George is written in first person narrative by Patricia Anne, the quieter, stable sister. For the most part she's the calm that everyone else swirls around. Even she gets involved and is endangered even if she was only trying to help. This a definitely a cozy mystery that will appeal to women more than men. It's cute and I like Patricia Anne. It's a great beach book. |
