MacPherson's Lament

Mystery and Suspense9/23/2001 Rating: 3 Scrolls

Elizabeth MacPherson's brother, Bill, is starting his law practice in Virginia. To his dismay, one of his first clients is his mother. She is filing for divorce from his father. What a way to begin a career!

Unfortunately his cases do not improve. Before he knows it he is dealing with a man who wants to know the nuances of the law, helping some old ladies wanting to sell their historical home, and being charged with fraud. It is enough to bring Elizabeth back from her husband and Scotland. She knows she has to help Bill and his partner, A.P. Hill, through their current crises. Maybe she can patch up her parents' marriage while she is in Virginia, too.

While cute, this is not a great novel. It is quick, light reading. Bill is one nave, lost soul. A.P. Hill has secrets but is a sharp lawyer. Margaret MacPherson, Elizabeth's and Bill's mother, is strong minded about her current wishes. Their father, Doug, is figuring out where his mid-life crisis is taking him. Elizabeth is busy getting into everyone else's business, her forte.

Have fun with this. It's a good beach book or one that you can be distracted away and not lose anything when you return to it. If you're looking for a gripping mystery, check out something else.
