High Five

Janet Evanovich

Mystery & Suspense6/2/2001

Bombshell Bounty Hunter. That is Stephanie Plum's new nickname. It has something to do with the fact that her cars keep blowing up. It doesn't matter what she is doing. This time she is trying to find her missing Uncle Fred. The only bounty job she has from her Uncle Vinnie is to bring in a man who was carrying a concealed knife.

That man is a dwarf who does not want to be taken to the police. Sometimes she tries to catch him. Sometimes she is looking for Uncle Fred. She is being followed by a bookie, Bunchy, who is also interested in Uncle Fred. Joe Morelli is around although they are no longer a couple. Joe takes her to one of his relative's wedding. Ranger gives Stephanie some extra work for his company above the bounty hunting.

The different areas of her life converge before she is done. She knows she has a problem when the dwarf moves in with her. She discovers that a felon she had helped convict a couple years earlier is out on parole. He may be stalking her. She does some chauffeuring for Ranger with a sex crazed teenager. And what is happening with her sex life?

Once again I found myself laughing out loud at Stephanie's exploits. These novels are well woven mysteries around the hilarious characters that populate the Burg in Trenton. These are adult novels, yet rarely explicit. Pictures of body parts found in a garbage bag are described yet not too gory detail.

This series starts with One for the Money. Because of the relationships, they should be read in order. I recommend this fifth one, as well, as long the reader is aware they are rough.
