As a busy homicide lieutenant for the New York Police and Security Department, Eve Dallas has seen all sorts of creative ways for one person to kill another. But with Bart Minnock's bizarre murder, she has a new twist. The president of U-Play, an electronic games business, is found decapitated in his game holoroom. The room was locked and no one appears to have gone in or out. Who killed Bart Minnock. And how?

This mystery is one for the people in the Electronic Detective Division to figure out. Eve and her partner Peabody need to figure out who did it. And Roarke, Eve's husband, gets involved with both. He's an e-geek as well as being one of the richest men on Earth. He's an ex-criminal who still has the moves and the street smarts. Once he had tried to hire Bart Minnock. But the young man wanted to start a company with his friends. Roarke helped get them off the ground. Although all debts have been paid off, the connection between the two men had remained. Roarke wants to know who killed Minnock.

Minnock was one of four equal partners in U Play, with his title being president. As the most social of the four, he was usually the public face. All four of them are electronic geniuses and had been close friends since college. Some of the connections go back to early childhood. They have a new, cutting edge holo game that is close to ready for production. That is the game Minnock was testing when he was killed. The other three now want to know what happened. Who hated this this much or wanted their successful small business that much? It's a puzzle for Eve, Peabody, Roarke, and the EDD to work through.

Fantasy In Death takes us deep into the world of electronic games and their future in 2060 or so. J.D. Robb (Nora Roberts) has developed good holographic room games in the past In Death novels that are now brought to another level. This is a well crafted locked room mystery - a "how done it" as much as a "who done it" novel. It works well.

Although the new characters for this story are believable, they don't quite come to reality in my head. The characters who remain constant throughout the series have some depth added. Each novel is a bit of personal growth for Eve and Roarke as well as investigating a murder. Their friends also get some time. In Fantasy in Death Nadine Furst's book featuring one of Eve's cases is being released. Friendship is the focus of this novel and the title could have as easily been Friendship in Death as Fantasy in Death.

While not as gripping or on the edge of some of the novels (although the final showdown is dangerous) this is a solid novel that flows well. This is a Locked Room novel with a bit of extra science fiction twist.
