Death of a Glutton

Mystery and Suspense 6/4/2007 Rating: 3 Scrolls

The Checkmate Singles Club are sponsoring a week at the castle hotel here in the Scottish Highlands. This week a group of professionals, rich, and high class singles are there to meet potential spouses. Although the owner and organizer thought she put together a good set of couples, the people there changed around to even stranger couplings. The not-so-silent partner invites herself along as well. She is seeking her own second husband. But the woman repulses the others in the group by her gluttony.

Soon they are avoiding her and the week is a dismal failure. Then she leaves a note that she is leaving for London. Instead she is found dead with an apple shoved into her mouth. Hamish Macbeth has his attention slightly diverted from the lovely Priscilla to find out who killed the glutton and why.

This is in the cozy mystery series by M.C. Beaton featuring the red-haired, laid back policeman Hamish Macbeth. Hamish has a knack for solving mysteries, but tries to stay in the background so he doesn't get a promotion. He is too fond of his own village and quiet life style to move to the city into a more stressful position.

Death of a Glutton is formulaic in its presentation. The murderer is unexpected unless the reader can think like Hamish. It's hard to identify with the single participants - perhaps because I'm a middle class American rather than an upper class or rich Brithisher. If you're reading the series you'll want to read this one. If you haven't read any of this series, start with a different one.
