Children of the StormElizabeth Peters
The Emerson family has settled in Egypt year round. It is after World War I. This year not only are Amelia, Emerson, Ramses, and Nefret working, but they are being joined by other family members. Emerson's brother, Walter, and his wife, Evelyn, one of Amelia's closest friends, are coming down from England. David and Lia are coming with their children. The family is being reunited. But where the Emersons gather, trouble follows. Their friend, Cyrus Vanderbilt, is packing up his recent fabulous discovery. Some of the best jewelry is stolen by an employee the Emersons had recommended. While the family is in Cairo Ramses is kidnapped by a mysterious woman. They meet a young man subject to fits guarded by an overprotective servant. Dire warnings continue to reach them. A woman from their past shows up. The Emersons welcome her and reunite her with her father. Soon the newest visitors are drawn into the search for both the jewel thief as well as the random attacks on different members of the family, both immediate and Egyptian. This is the 15th novel of this series, and one of the better ones for the mystery portion as well as for the family development. The threads intertwine well, both invisible and obvious. The mystery is important to the tale, not just a background for the family's story. There are happenings around them they don't realize are part of an overall scheme. If someone has not read any of these novels, that person will be fine picking this up. Family history will have been missed, but there is a good synopsis at the beginning. And the last page, as a student of the Emersons, had me laughing out loud. You can find more about this book at Crocodile on the Sandbank |
