Bimbos of the Death Sun

Sharyn McCrumb

Mystery & Suspense 10/8/1999

Jay Omega (James Owen Mega, PhD) is an engineering professor who wanted to explain his scientific theories. He could not prove them, so he wrote a hard science fiction novel based on his ideas. He was even to sell the novel. To his embarrassment, his publishers named it Bimbos of the Death Sun. Now he is attending a science fiction convention to promote his book.

Appin Dungannon is the major guest of honor at the convention. He has written a series of fantasy novels based on a Viking warrior, Tratyn Runewind. When he wrote the first novel, he wanted to explore Celtic legend. He did not expect the outcome. He ended up with a long series starring a character he learned to hate and fans he hated almost as much.

The first night of the convention Dungannon alienated the fans at the convention, the organizers of the convention, the other guests of the convention, and anyone else he came across. He was there for the money. The next day, he is found dead.

This is a murder mystery. It is average enough in that genre. Its main appeal, though, is for any of us people who have attended science fiction conventions in the last 15 years or so. (Yes, I have to admit to attending a few of them.) The participants of the convention are well depicted. This is a book to laugh at ourselves. Jay Omega is also featured in Zombies of the Gene Pool
