The Joy Luck Club

General Fiction and Poetry 6/12/1998 Rating: 5 + Scrolls

This examines the lives of Chinese women who were raised in China and later immigrated to the United States. It then compares/contrasts them to the lives of their American born daughters. It takes different stories from each woman's past. These stories show their feelings, how they were molded, how they related to their families.

I have to admit some confusion keeping the correct mother with her daughter early in the book. There is not conformity in whose story is told in what order. Yet each story has its own fascination as well as weaving into the whole.

Great book! It is an interesting study of old world versus modern American visions. Amy Tan offers insights into the relationships of the women. I saw the movie once late at night and had been impressed. I'm very glad I finally read the book.
