Much Afraid is crippled and has a twisted face. She is a member of the awful Fearing family. She has trusted the Shepherd and that makes her life worthwhile. She wants more, though. She wants to love someone and be loved. The Shepherd promises her that she will journey to the high places. He will call her specially and give her some companions for the arduous journey. She readies her house, but her family tries to keep her from following the Shepherd. They want her to marry her cousin, Craven Fear. Much Afraid is able to get away from the Fearings with help. She meets the Shepherd who introduces her to the companions to go with her, Sorrow and Suffering. Much Afraid lives up to her name frequently as the three of them journey to the promised high places. The allegory for Christians is easy to find. Much Afraid wants to love Her Saviour more than anything, but so many things get in her way. How many times have I allowed pride, bitterness, or self pity come between me and my journey with Christ? The book is written along a Pilgrim's Progress line. While I was able to follow it easily enough, it did not draw my interest very far. It was written in the 50's, so has been around a long time. I believe it is a Christian classic. If so, there are others who liked it better than I. |
